Kids rule – a perfect summer’s day in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale

07 Jun 2024

Summer days just hit right on The Bellarine. From dawn until dusk, it’s a kid’s life of fun and making memories. Here’s how we love to spend a perfect sunshiny day together in our favourite corner of the world – Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.

Rise and shine to the sound of birdsong and waves hitting the shore. Kick-off with an early morning cliff walk along the Point Lonsdale Coastal Trail. Did you bring the binoculars? You’ll want to keep an eye out for majestic seabirds on the wing and big ships navigating the treacherous waters of Port Phillip heads (The Rip). And did we mention the lighthouse?

Grab an outdoor table at Pasquini’s Deli & Café on the main strip of Point Lonsdale. Tuck into a breakfast feast fit for kings, queens and every kid. Browse a full menu and cabinets groaning with baked goods and deli-style goodness. There’s something for everyone in this popular local institution.

Head across the road to the foreshore playground for a swing, climb and frolic before hitting the sand at the Point Lonsdale foreshore. Time for beach fun in the sun! Kids can dip in and out of the waves, explore mini-worlds lurking in rockpools and build towering sand castles. Big kids can join in or take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline.

If you time it right, join the team at Queenscliff’s Marine and Freshwater Discover Centre for unbeatable holiday program activities. Or, to give the kids a great start with surf awareness and water safety, take a look at the popular ‘nippers’ programs offered at Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.

Piknik at Swan Bay is totally kid-friendly, super-funky and housed in a converted servo with colourful, fun décor. It’s a perfect lunch stop spot. While the kids tuck into toasties and home-baked bikkies, grown-ups can relish the signature calamari salad, burger or selection of local wines and beers. Happy days!

Grab your sunhats – it’s time for more beach fun and another playground. Queenscliff’s Princess Park playground is marine-themed, sand-based and oodles of fun. Lots of ladders and climbing challenges, a lighthouse and swings. With direct access to Queenscliff Beach, the afternoon unfolds naturally.

Lazy walks along the sandy stretch, paddling in the calm shallows, exploring the jetty at either end, watching the leisurely parade of smaller boats cruising by and pondering the Black Lighthouse (the only black lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere). It’s also an ideal spot for snorkelling or paddleboarding. Hours of fun.

Wander around to the Queenscliff Harbour to stroll the boardwalk, watch for silver fishy flashes in the sea beneath, and witness the Queenscliff-Sorrento ferry coming and going. An easy dinner’s on the cards – fish and chips shared harbour-side amongst the boats and gentle bustle of the marina.

Make your way up the main street to the most popular destination in town – the Scandinavian Ice Cream Company. Everyone gets to order a scoop (or two) of creamy goodness in their fave flavour. It’s the perfect finish for a perfect summer’s day.
