Maybe We All Need a Holiday More Than We Think

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and written a blog.

Life has been busy. Business has been busy. Home has been busy. And if I’m being honest, I think that’s true for a lot of us at the moment.

Lately, almost every conversation I have seems to end up in the same place.

People are tired.

Not just physically tired, but mentally. Emotionally. The kind of tired that comes from trying to keep up with everything.

The cost of living keeps climbing, interest rates have stretched so many families, groceries seem to cost more every week and there never quite seems to be enough hours in the day. Add work, kids, school, sport, ageing parents, trying to look after yourself somewhere in between… it’s a lot.

Sometimes it can feel like we’re all just getting through the week.

As the owner of Queenscliff & Coastal Holiday Bookings, I’m incredibly lucky that I get to meet people who are about to take a break. And you know what I notice?

Almost every guest arrives carrying the weight of everyday life.

But after a couple of days by the coast, something changes.

People slow down.

Phones stay in pockets a little longer.

Families sit around a table and actually talk.

Kids build sandcastles instead of staring at screens.

Dogs race along the beach like they’ve never been happier.

People laugh more.

Sleep better.

Breathe a little deeper.

It’s amazing what a change of scenery can do.

The funny thing is, we often convince ourselves that a holiday has to be two weeks overseas or cost thousands of dollars.

It doesn’t.

Sometimes it’s simply two nights away.

A morning coffee by the water.

Fish and chips on the foreshore.

Watching the waves instead of watching another episode on Netflix.

Giving yourself permission to stop.

I think we’ve forgotten that rest isn’t something we have to earn.

It’s something we need.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the years, it’s that the memories people talk about years later aren’t usually the expensive ones.

They’re the simple ones.

Walking to get ice cream.

Playing cards around the dining table.

Watching a storm roll in from the comfort of the couch.

Taking the dog for a walk on the beach.

Those are the moments that stay with us.

If you’ve been telling yourself you’ll book that weekend away “one day”, maybe this is your reminder that one day doesn’t have to be months away.

Maybe it can be next weekend.

Maybe it can be before life gets even busier.

Because the laundry will still be there.

The emails will still be there.

Work will still be waiting on Monday.

But so will another opportunity to make memories with the people who matter most.

And if our little corner of the Bellarine can be the place where you reconnect, slow down and simply enjoy being together, then I think that’s pretty special.

Take care of yourselves.

See you by the sea.
